HOME & FAMILY

A different kind of back-to-school story

From the September 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My son and I are homeschooling buddies. We spend our mornings roaming from desk to couch to kitchen table. Reading, spelling, math, history, science—we cover them all, at our own pace and in our own way. I never think to school him differently. That is, until our family moves to Long Island.

Within hours of arriving at our new home, I'm told by neighbors how wonderful the local schools are. Surprisingly, something stirs inside me. Somehow the idea of taking a year off from homeschooling feels like the right thing to do.

It's a big decision, so I do what I usually do when faced with a fork in the road—I turn to God. I let go of my previously outlined plan of how I expect my son's education to progress. My ideas, however well intentioned, can't keep me from hearing what God has in store for Enrico. So I pray to release any preconceptions and to allow circumstances to be shaped according to God's design.
