It didn't turn out the way we expected

It turned out even better!

From the September 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It was my son's freshman year of college and he was hoping to join one of many social fraternities that played a central role in campus life. One of Bo's new friends was an officer of an influential group whose high standards and strong values really appealed to him. Bo was courted, or "rushed," aggressively by this group. Each day he expected to get an invitation to join, and each day he was disappointed.

I knew how important it was for Bo be a part of this group. During his high school years, he hadn't been elected or chosen for any special group or leadership position. That was difficult for him. And it was painful for me to see the hurt it caused him. More than anything, I wanted my son to be happy, to feel loved and successful. He'd gone off to college with great expectations and was now feeling discouraged to be facing the same obstacles.

So Bo and I prayed together to see God's goodness at work. I thought a lot about the fact that God is Love, and God is everywhere. That meant my son was surrounded by Love. He couldn't be rejected or excluded or without Love. He was included, both in God's love itself and in the brotherhood and sisterhood of God's children that was a natural outgrowth of this love. These prayers were very inspiring for both of us. However, rush ended without an invitation from this fraternity.
