Asia bureau chief and international news editor are just a few of the positions that Clayton Jones has held during his long Monitor career. Currently he's the paper's chief editorial writer. Mr. Jones deals daily with reader concerns about bias, balance, and partisan conflict.
"Mrs. Eddy," he says, "endorsed the language that the paper really should be 'a most genial persuader of men.'1 So it's important, especially in editorials, not to be strident.
"We try to be responsive to every reader, but we don't endorse candidates for office. The purpose of the Monitor is to help the individual to become a better thinker.
