KIDS' PLACE

A different kind of fairy tale

From the June 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I LOVE ACTING. I wanted to participate in a play at my music school, in Hennef, Germany, and signed up for it. The play was called Frau Holle, which is a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. You didn't need to audition for the play, and everyone who signed up got a part. I was given the part of a fairy. I was a sun fairy who was a helper of Frau Holle, one of the main characters in the play. I had to take care of the weather and make the sun shine. I really liked my part!

Since our play was done in the style of a musical, in addition to acting, all of us also had to sing. But because I have a naturally low voice, I ran into some problems. I couldn't sing as high as the other girls could, and my voice didn't seem the right voice for the role of a fairy. Also, I wasn't speaking loudly enough.

One day, when my mother and I came home, there was a message on our answering machine. It was the director of the play. He said that I couldn't take part in the play because of the singing and my low voice.
