LETTERS

From the January 2009 issue of The Christian Science Journal

INSIGHTFUL ARTICLES

I just want to thank you for the wonderful Journals. It is a highlight of every month when the new one arrives, and I save and re-read my old ones, too. So much inspiration! I particularly enjoyed the interview with Ron Ballard in the November Journal [p. 18] (although all these interviews are always good). The articles by Sally Brown [p. 34] and Anne-Francoise Bouffé [p. 32] were encouraging and insightful. I am always glad to have a new angle on humility, and solid evidence of healing and clear explanations of the difference between the medical approach and the Christian Science approach are also extremely helpful. And then I could mention all the other articles in this journal, which are also so interesting. Thank you so much.

THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR

The articles honoring 100 years of the Monitor are of especial interest to me [November 2008 Journal, pp. 42-53]. To read about the experiences of today's young writers for this unique newspaper brings back my own days when I was immensely privileged to be on the staff. The Editor at that time was Erwin D. Canham, a man not only devoted to Christian Science, but a great newspaperman as well. He was one of the most respected men I have ever met, and as a journalist I have met quite a few! Coming to work was a pleasure because it was fun—serious fun—all the time.

Erwin Canham was a man immensely respected, as much in other countries as in our own. Winston Churchill called the Monitor the sanest newspaper in America. Through the years the Monitor has been singularly blessed with fine editors and writers.

ONE TO SAVE

Thank you so much for our wonderful Journals. You really do keep abreast of the times. The recent November issue [2008] is so interesting and one I'll be saving for our grandchildren. The article by Nate Egan ["Lost and Found," p. 60] was so moving. His reaching out to find God's love was answered. In the Preface to Science and Health, page xi, Mrs. Eddy wrote that now, as then, these works "are not supernatural, but supremely natural." I send my love and gratitude to you all.

GIVE-AND-TAKE FORMAT

I am continuing to benefit from your Conversations feature and am much in the Journal's debt for it over the past months and years. The unique combination, in a give-and-take format, of spiritual unfoldment with years of practical experience and victories has been an inspiration for me.

In particular, insights provided in the Conversations in your October and November issues stand out like stars in consciousness. Fenella Bennetts's insight on what forgiveness is all about [October 2008, p. 18] and Ron Ballard's—about living one's healing, despite outward claims of delay [November 2008, p. 18]—all these and much more are treasures.

A GREAT SENSE OF GOD'S INFINITY

I loved the interview with Fenella Bennetts by Jeffrey Hildner in the October Journal [p. 18]. I have read it through seven times. Each time some spiritual and impressive meaning unfolded. I especially loved how she brought out such a great sense of the infinity of God. She is so right when she said how much this was evident when looking at the night sky. It is so expansive and without obstructions, just as our communion with God is. She queried the reader, How often do we ponder God's infinite wisdom, infinite goodness, and love? Then she asked just what the implications are of this for us. I spent a lot of time pondering these questions. It was so uplifting.
