LETTERS

From the November 2009 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am so grateful for Don Griffith's article in the September Journal, "That 'Still Small Voice' of God: Too Small to Speak to Extreme Weather?" (p. 50). I was on my way to Bermuda the week prior to hurricane Bill. I grabbed the latest Journal and took it with me. But it wasn't until several days later, when the island was preparing for hurricane Bill, that I sat down and read Don Griffith's article. It quieted my thought a lot.

The day before the storm was due our airline called. We were to fly out that afternoon, but were told our flight had been moved up to get us out safely. The wind was really picking up and the seas were building. I began to feel anxious, so I found a quiet spot on the beach and read the article again. I listened for the "still small voice" of Love. Many messages began coming to me. The strongest one was, "The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace" (Science and Health, p. 506.). The Christian Science Bible Lesson that week was entitled "Mind." I understood that Mind's thought is my thought and fear was a lie about me. There was no fear to promote mental upheaval externalized as a hurricane. I really liked that idea shared in the article that, "... weather, spiritually discerned, is the creation of God ...." I understood that we are talking about atmosphere and remembered the words of Hymn No. 144, "In atmosphere of Love divine, / We live, and move, and breathe; ..." (Christian Science Hymnal).

Within the hour my niece commented that the winds had died down and the whitecaps on the water were gone. Indeed, five hours later when we boarded our flight there was complete calm and the sun was peeking through.
