THE ABILITY TO HEAL AND BE HEALED

From the August 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AS A HEALING METHOD is reliable and effective. Why? It's based on the divine laws of God, and the spiritually scientific way in which the Master Christian, Jesus Christ, healed. These divine laws include what I think of as the law of spiritual existence: that man—each of us—is created in the image and likeness of God, Spirit. As spiritual, not material. As harmonious, whole, perfect. Godlike. As sinless, free from illness and, yes, even death. And, because the laws of God are always in effect, they impel us to mentally assert our built-in immunity from opposing, matter-based concepts that knock for entrance at the door of our thinking.

When Jesus called to fishermen on the shores of Galilee, "Follow me," they dropped everything, including their well-established livelihood, to become his disciples. They obeyed the command of the Master to instead become "fishers of men" (Matt. 4:19), to minister to and heal others. No doubt Jesus perceived qualities in these somewhat ordinary men that would enable them to learn the laws of God, Spirit, through his teachings—laws they would then put into practice to become rather extraordinary men.

Today, as was the case with the disciples, there are qualities that contribute to our own ability to heal and to effectively demonstrate the Science of Christianity, as Mary Baker Eddy fully spelled it out in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
