While on a trip with friends a few years ago, I took a nap in the car, and when I woke up, I had trouble becoming fully alert. Everything had a sluggish, almost dreamy feeling.
When we stopped for dinner I struggled to stay awake. I could see and hear what was going on but could only participate in the conversation on a basic level. I had trouble ordering and when the food came I couldn’t remember which was mine. When my wife realized I was having a problem, we left and called a Christian Science practitioner for help. I’d seen my mother and one of my friends suffer from the effects of a stroke and now I was worried I’d had a small stroke as well.
The practitioner reminded me of an odd word from that week’s Bible Lesson. It was the word rereward, from Isaiah 58:8: “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward.”
