In praise of Christian Science nurses

From the August 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need,” Mary Baker Eddy states on page 494 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This truth has been proved to me many times throughout my life. I find it so reassuring that regardless of what challenges cross our path, we can have confidence that divine Love, God, will meet our every need. How comforting it is to know that this Love is ever present and is in operation right now, right here! Mrs. Eddy concludes in the same paragraph that “to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good.”

I relied on this practical yet profound statement during a time of need a couple of years ago. I am a self-employed artist working in wood, and I use many different power and hand tools in my work. One day, as I was guiding a large piece of wood through the moving blade of my band saw, I pushed my arm into the blade, which cut deeply into my wrist. I calmly turned the machine off, wrapped my wrist with a nearby piece of cloth, and immediately knew that divine Love would meet this need. Though there was no great pain, it was evident that the cut was serious. I secured the cloth on my arm, walked into the house, and called a practitioner I had worked with in the past.

She, too, was calm and said she would work with me. She gave me some references to study in both the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings. She also suggested I call a Christian Science nurse.
