The blessings of waiting on God

From the October 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Both the Scriptures and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy have much to say about the good that comes from “waiting” on God. I’ve found that waiting can mean serving God, or it can often mean being persistent in prayer.

In the Bible, the book of Isaiah proclaims, “Blessed are all they that wait for him [the Lord]” (30:18) and “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (40:31). And in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy states: “Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept. Patience must ‘have her perfect work’ ” (p. 454).

In doing some Bible research, I’ve seen that many Bible passages amplify “waiting” by adding the word “patiently,” while some translations employ the word “eagerly,” instead. I have often been very much helped by embracing eagerness in the “waiting” process. Eagerness implies an expectation of healing and progress. It nurtures the powerful quality of hope and expectation of reward.
