Some years ago my wife had a wonderful opportunity to work overseas. I was excited for her and wanted to support her, but it was a big move and, frankly, quite overwhelming for various reasons. It was especially difficult because it would take me hundreds of miles from the home into which I had finally settled after a long peripatetic career in the military.
Shortly after we arrived in our new home, I started having severe pain in my legs, and the condition quickly deteriorated to the point where I had to use crutches to move around. Even though I was receiving treatment through prayer from a Christian Science practitioner, I became bedridden and couldn’t sleep through the night. Neither could my wife. At this point we needed the assistance of a Christian Science nurse.
A newly married couple who were Christian Science nurses took turns providing the round-the-clock care I needed. The tender love and unselfish devotion to good that they expressed were amazing and far beyond anything we had expected. They divided the work into two 12-hour shifts, and, at seven o’clock each morning and evening, they would hug each other, and the one on duty for the next 12 hours would turn to the job of caring for me.
