From faith to understanding

From the June 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One thing I just love about The Christian Science Journal is that it is a place to meet with fellow readers and, with care and sensitivity, think through the issues that are the “biggies,” so to speak. This article certainly aims to provide one of those opportunities. Two of the words in the title, faith and understanding, have far-reaching religious and even historical connotations. In this article, though, we’ll examine those words on a more personal level. We’ll explore the questions: What do a faith in God and an understanding of God truly gain us? How well do we feel as though we understand God? Not just believe in God, but really understand the nature of God?

Today, many people are searching for—and some have actually discovered—the connections that exist among faith, spiritual understanding, and spiritual healing. The search for the understanding of God is one of humanity’s greatest searches. Even in biblical times, people gave it priority: “With all thy getting get understanding,” states Proverbs 4:7.

It’s beautiful how the ability to understand God—the understanding that transforms thought and heals disease—has its beginnings in faith. While faith alone is not the whole of spiritual healing, faith certainly is beneficial to opening the door toward understanding God’s power to heal.
