We had been visiting a Christian Science church for about six months, when my daughter was diagnosed with urinary reflux. During those six months, I was still taking my kids to see a doctor and relying on medical means for their health care. Yet I enjoyed going to church and learning more about Christian Science. The main draw for me was learning, along with my family, that God is Love. Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “… all that really exists is in and of God, and manifests His love” (p. 340).
It was time to put into practice what I was learning. The doctors said that the only options for my daughter were either surgery or taking daily medication and hoping she would “outgrow it.” Neither of those felt like acceptable options for a little girl who was only four years old. My husband and I simply didn’t accept that this was the best that could be done.
Mrs. Eddy wrote: “Which of these two theories concerning man are you ready to accept? One is the mortal testimony, changing, dying, unreal. The other is the eternal and real evidence, bearing Truth’s signet, its lap piled high with immortal fruits” (Science and Health, p. 494). I asked myself, “Which one of those two descriptions would you choose for yourself and your loved ones?” And I immediately thought, “I’d like the ‘lap piled high with immortal fruits,’ please!”
