Only one Father

From the January 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Originally written in Portuguese, this article first appeared in the August 2014 Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German editions of The Herald of Christian Science.

One of the most important things I learned when I started to study Christian Science was that we all have one and the same Father, God. I found out that our relationship to God, divine Love, is unbreakable, because it’s based on our eternal coexistence with Him. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, describes this relationship in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Referring to one of Jesus’ statements (see John 10:30), she explains: “…‘I and my Father are one,’—that is, one in quality, not in quantity. As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being” (p. 361).

Since we are one with the Father as His image and likeness, we reflect His nature. And since God is Spirit and is perfect, His children are spiritual and express His perfection. This understanding has helped me many times and enabled me to help my daughter, Anette, to find healing of a physical condition.

When Anette was 15 years old, she was medically diagnosed with epilepsy. Because being in places with many people made her feel anxious and brought on seizures, my wife and I kept her from being in public places by herself. Even being at school with other students could be challenging for her. And she could not sleep without taking medicine.
