During the descent of a flight, I suddenly and unexpectedly suffered very intense head pains. This troubled me. Another flight was coming up shortly—it would have two takeoffs and two landings—and I was concerned I might have to go through the same thing again.
Then I would be traveling for two weeks with a group of people I had never met, staying in a different hotel each night. I recalled a pattern I had experienced when traveling overseas. After a couple of days of traveling, I always would seem to get sick for some part of a day.
As a Christian Scientist, I realized I needed to face my concerns through prayer. Whenever I fly, I like to ponder these words from the 91st Psalm: “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust” (verse 4). I also like to pray with this excerpt of a passage from Unity of Good by Mary Baker Eddy: “Be allied to the deific power, and all that is good will aid your journey” (p. 17). (The full statement is: “Emerson says, ‘Hitch your wagon to a star.’ I say, Be allied to the deific power, and all that is good will aid your journey, as the stars in their courses fought against Sisera. (Judges v. 20.).”)
