If we’ve been raised in Christian Science, we may be tempted to take its daily blessings and harmonizing effects for granted. There comes a time, however, when it’s necessary to dig deeper in order to make this healing Science our own. Our renewed efforts toward spiritual growth are naturally marked by healing, even instantaneous healing. As prayer and study lead to radical shifts in thought and fundamental transformation, we should not be surprised by our improving circumstances.
Speaking of the importance of pure intentions, Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now. This point won, you have started as you should. You have begun at the numeration-table of Christian Science, and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your advancement. Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way” (p. 326).
One of my early eye-opening experiences occurred in my first year at college, while living far away from my childhood home. I had been raised in a Christian Science Sunday School and sheltered under the protective wing of parental support and prayer. But away from home on a large university campus, I felt overwhelmed by the vast array of new philosophies, habits, cultures, and religions I encountered. My study of Science fell by the wayside as I explored a variety of new ideas and popular trends. This continued until an epidemic of mononucleosis hit our student dormitory.
