Recently, instead of being annoyed by the gardener at the park using a noisy weed cutter in an otherwise peaceful environment, I cheerfully remarked, “You think you’ve done your job, and the next time you’re here, the grass has grown again!” We both laughed.
As I thought about the grass, I realized that just as it continues to grow, even after being cut down, so do we often feel “cut down” by tragedies, hardship, criticism, and disappointment. However, these experiences turn us naturally to our always-with-us Father-Mother God, whose love renews and restores us by showing us that we are, in reality, the spiritual sons and daughters of God. Through turning to God in prayer, we discover more of our inherent joy and wholeness and continue to grow spiritually.
The Bible tells us: “The Lord God made the earth and the heavens, and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground” (Genesis 2:4, 5). Mary Baker Eddy writes of this passage, “Here is the emphatic declaration that God creates all through Mind, not through matter,—that the plant grows, not because of seed or soil, but because growth is the eternal mandate of Mind” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 520).
