For many months I had been deeply contemplating the metaphysical concept that there is no matter. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, is adamant on this point. In her book The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, she says: “Spirit is infinite; therefore Spirit is all. ‘There is no matter’ is not only the axiom of true Christian Science, but it is the only basis upon which this Science can be demonstrated” (p. 357).
Further, in her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, we find what she calls “the scientific statement of being,” which begins: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (p. 468).
When I finally felt I was beginning to get a handle on understanding this groundbreaking truth, I had an opportunity to put this understanding into practice. Returning home from a meeting, I parked my car in the garage and hurried to enter the house. On the way, my foot slammed into something hard and unyielding. The pain was immediate and so excruciating that I was unable to speak or even think.
