For several days I had been striving to feel the harmony and joy of divine Love’s presence but was finding it difficult to forgive a relative’s unkindness toward me. Then I remembered a potent statement Christ Jesus made about perception: “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness” (Luke 11:34).
These words helped me turn my thought away from the dark material scene, toward the one Mind, which is God. Christian Science teaches that God is the only creator, and His creation is very good—the perfect reflection of Him. That enabled me to see the purity of my relative as a divine idea. Reasoning that God’s view of man is the only real view, I concluded that mortal mind’s drama was unreal—an illusion. The whole incident immediately seemed like a dream I could put out of thought.
Filled with gratitude for the affection my relative and I shared, I phoned her, and she greeted me lovingly. She shared the thought that we could both leave all tendency to assign blame, and focus on God’s goodness. I suggested that we repeat together Psalms 34:3: “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.” Our affections deepened from that moment on.
