Spiritual Short

The changeless harmony of God’s creatures

From the October 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was driving to the beach to go surfing, when I saw a myna bird lying in the middle of the road. After pulling over, I picked up the bird and found it was still alive but not moving. I carried it off the road and put it under a nearby hedge and decided I would return to check on it after surfing. As a Christian Scientist, I was used to turning to God when faced with any discordant situation. So I began to pray for the bird.

When I came back, I found the bird in the same location. It was alert and breathing, but immobile. I picked it up, placed it on my lap, and drove home.

At home, I put the bird in a shoe box, then searched the internet for information on how to care for myna birds. Then a new thought occurred to me: The bird was a perfect, spiritual creation of God and therefore free from injury; what needed to be healed was my perception of the situation.
