Cherishing our Church Manual in the public practice of Christian Science

From the March 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What a great joy to have had well over half of our worldwide Journal-listed practitioners join together for two distinct and different video conference calls last August. These meetings were the culmination of many conference calls among small groups of practitioners that occurred throughout the year. Following are some of the healings the participants shared in the first meeting on the topic of “Cherishing Our Manual By-Laws.”

Article VIII, Section 4, of the Manual is known as the “Daily Prayer,” and states: “It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: ‘Thy kingdom come;’ let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!” (Mary Baker Eddy, Manual of The Mother Church, p. 41).

One speaker explained how this “Daily Prayer” is our “spiritual breakfast” that fills our thought with love from God and for God and His idea, man. This prayer enlarges our understanding of God and enables us to say, as Mrs. Eddy did, “Each day I know Him nearer, love Him more, and humbly pray to serve Him better” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 174). As she concluded, the more we study and pray for ourselves, the more we are in tune with divine reality and are ready to joyfully manifest the Christ-power that reforms, blesses, and heals individually and collectively.
