As I sat in my attorney’s office, he stated that the ultimate outcome of my case depended solely on which judge I was assigned. The judge’s personal bias would either undermine or help my case. But as he spoke, a spiritual intuition firmly overrode his opinion with conviction and authority. I heard through spiritual sense, almost as clearly as if someone present had spoken, “There is a higher law!”
Many of us have experienced difficulties that challenge our faith in justice. Through my very modest experience, I discovered that justice results from acknowledging and applying the higher spiritual law, God’s ever-present law of harmony, to our situation. Then we find that no person or circumstance can thwart justice, because we understand that all power rests on the side of God, good. In fact, justice and mercy are attributes of God.
Four essential guiding ideas unfolded in my thought over the next several months, stemming from that initial encouraging message of God’s law being the higher law—and, in truth, the only law. First, I recognized that this intuition was the “still, small voice” of God, divine Truth, assuring me that He loved me and that justice would prevail, regardless of which judge oversaw my case. Why? Because, as Christian Science teaches, God, infinite good, is the only authority in charge, and His laws govern and bless all impartially, justly, wisely. The Bible provides many examples of this, such as the wisdom of Solomon, vividly illustrating divine justice in action. God’s law of righteousness governing all and overriding every attempt of error to sabotage good both compels and supports honesty, justice, and fairness. As we read in Psalms, “Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face” (89:14).
