Freedom found following Jesus’ teachings

From the October 2022 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Is there anyone who doesn’t want to experience freedom and love? The Bible assures us that we are “heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ,” and, as such, we may experience “the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Romans 8:17, 21). Christ Jesus’ life exemplified the Love that is God, as well as the freedom found in knowing the truth. However, some conditions are involved in realizing our spiritual heritage.

The eighth chapter of John contains Jesus’ words, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (verse 32). His preceding words contain a condition for knowing the truth: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31, emphases added).

Jesus gave specific instructions for how we continue in his word in his Sermon on the Mount. He identified the dos and don’ts of Christian living. The dos include being meek and merciful. The don’ts include judging others or laying up treasures on earth.
