Shortly before I learned about Christian Science, I had been diagnosed with a condition called periodontal disease, and the dentist told me oral surgery was required to treat it. But after reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, I was certain that “all things are possible to God,” as the first sentence of the opening chapter of the book states: “The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love” (p. 1).
So I set about working toward “a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.” But after a couple of years, there was no visible change in the condition, although I had little discomfort. I learned that I needed to turn away completely from what looked like a state of my health.
During this time, I took Christian Science class instruction, an in-depth course on Christian Science taught by an authorized teacher. Afterward, I had the conviction that this condition could be healed through spiritual treatment and by relying on the firm truth that God loves me.
