Our covenant with God

From the April 2023 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Did you know that you have a sacred contract with God? The Bible refers to it as a covenant. God’s covenants present His promises to His beloved children, including each of us. Our covenant with God establishes the basis and conditions of our relationship to Him, as well as consequences if those conditions are unmet. It’s important for us to be aware of this agreement, as it is the key to our happiness, health, and success.

Covenants are one of the most important themes in the Bible, because they promise deliverance from bondage, distress, and suffering. Many covenants are referred to in the Scriptures, but five of them are considered the most important. They include God’s covenants with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David. The fifth covenant came through Christ Jesus and is known as the New Covenant.

Many times the children of Israel ignored their covenant with God, breaking His commandments and deciding for themselves what was good and what was evil. During the Israelites’ rebellions and subsequent hardships, the Hebrew prophets spoke of a New Covenant, saying that God would one day fulfill all His promises, making evident His true relationship to His people and blessing the nations through them.
