It all started when my four-year-old daughter developed what is commonly known as impetigo, a skin disease that is medically seen as contagious. When the symptoms appeared, I knew that I could not have her attend kindergarten in this condition, so I kept her home. As I cared for her to make her feel comfortable, I also prayed for her.
Following what I had been learning from the teachings of Christian Science, I prayed to know what was spiritually true about my daughter. I thought deeply about truths that could be found in the Bible, such as that my daughter was good and perfect, made in God’s image and likeness. The teachings of Christ Jesus bring out that God, Spirit, is our Father. And Christian Science explains that, as children of our Father-Mother God, we must be spiritual.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures includes this statement: “A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 463). I found it so helpful to know that an ailment or error of any kind could not be a part of God’s creation—including my beloved daughter.
