Just before his crucifixion, Jesus was understandably concerned about the future of Christianity and the discouraging direction it looked like it was taking. Nearly all of his followers were about to disconnect from him, including all of his disciples but John.
Over the three previous years, such amazing things had happened. Jesus and his followers had seen the power of God heal adults and children, even raise some from death. They’d seen God’s power feed multitudes, still storms, reverse the claim of insanity, and empower Jesus to walk on water.
Things had been going so well. That final time Jesus entered Jerusalem, people cheered and waved long palm fronds in gratitude and celebration. His overall message of God’s constant love and of how God’s perfection is always present in His creation really looked as if it was gaining a foothold.
