Of Good Report

Not my will, but Thine

From the March 2024 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Over the years I have had so many examples of God lovingly caring for me. I’ve found that God meets my every need, even when circumstances seem beyond help. It is so important to let go of a limited, material picture, get self out of the way, and recognize the ever-availability of God’s infinite blessings.

One of my favorite hymns is Mary Baker Eddy’s “Feed My Sheep” (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 304). I appreciate how the opening lines—“Shepherd, show me how to go / O’er the hillside steep”—don’t say that I will show God what I need, even when the going gets tough. When the way gets “rugged,” if we reach out to God, trusting that He will provide what is truly needed for us, we will find that His tender care encircles and embraces us. Meekly, but not blindly, we follow Love’s direction, and find healing.

Many years ago an angel message from God helped me make some difficult decisions, but I then felt overwhelmed with fear and concern. I had a very successful architectural business that was prospering in the Midwest, but I had felt led to close my office, pack up, and move back to my New England roots to help care for a loved one. I felt somewhat like Moses when he was tasked to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. My situation was not nearly as monumental as his, but it required the same listening to and trust in God. It took a few months to gather up my belongings and make the 1,200-mile journey back east. When I arrived, I had no job, no place to live, and no financial reserves to depend upon.
