Before I learned about Christian Science, the only time I recall thinking about life being anything other than mortal existence was one day in grade school. My best friend and I were walking to school, and we were talking about the universe. We talked a bit about what we thought might be “out there,” and it gave me a glimpse of a higher source of life. But in the years that followed, I don’t recall pondering anything else about God.
As I grew up, I practiced doing good to others. However, during my college years, I was influenced to get involved in some activities that didn’t fit with being entirely good. But my life was about to change when I discovered that there is a God who is entirely good, and that I reflect His goodness.
I had met a young woman who expressed many qualities I found attractive, and this made me want to express such qualities more fully myself. After we had been dating for a few months, we were at her parents’ home, when we had an argument. My girlfriend ran to another room, leaving me alone in utter distress. It appeared that our relationship might be ending, and I was extremely sorrowful. With my eyes closed and my face in my hands, I cried out, “Won’t someone help me?”
