“I’m home now”

From the October 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Several years after I graduated from college, I needed to apply my growing understanding of God to a difficult apartment search. After a long day of not finding anything, I decided to head back to my temporary lodgings and return some calls that I’d missed while out. I left a message on the first call back that said, “I’m home now and can be reached later at your convenience.”

That seemed like a basic statement, but because my spiritual understanding of God’s care, and of what home truly was, had grown, that message ended up being a revelation to me.

From a human standpoint, I was not home; I didn’t even have a place of my own! I was staying at my friends’ apartment while they were away. And yet, metaphysically speaking, I was already “home.” I knew I resided with God and this was permanent regardless of my human circumstances—I could have been on the moon, but I knew I was “home.” Soon after this revelation, I found the perfect apartment in which I lived for many years.
