Genuine gratitude

From the November 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I absolutely love the book of Psalms in the Bible. Lots of the chapters and verses are filled with genuine and heartfelt gratitude to God.

Many years ago I yearned for this gratitude, but wouldn’t have been able to say I actually felt it. It just hadn’t landed for me—my gratitude often felt like lip service, especially around celebrations like Thanksgiving.

Let me explain. My wife and I had been moving from house to house and from area to area for many years looking for what was just right. We seemed to never quite find it. After each move and change, instead of gratitude, we encountered dissatisfaction. This unsettled and discontented mentality, which I came to see as ingratitude, had an impact on church work, relationships, family situations, jobs, and even vacations.
