An account in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes tells how one poor wise man saved an entire city from the onslaught of a powerful king (see 9:14, 15). This brief narrative describes the man as having a dearth of material riches but a wealth of good judgment.
There is much to be gained by studying this remarkable story in all its aspects. A straight-through, literal reading of it shows the great significance of expressing wisdom when facing challenging circumstances.
But as with all biblical accounts and narratives, it’s helpful to strive to see the spiritual dimension of it, beyond its literal meaning, as well. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy affirms, “The one important interpretation of Scripture is the spiritual” (p. 320). Readers and devotees of the Bible can take these words to heart.
