“TSUNAMI WARNING … A tsunami is expected at approximately 12:00 P.M.” This emergency warning sent by text, voicemail, and email at 11:26 a.m. on December 5, 2024, jolted me. It continued, “If you are on a beach or very near the coast EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.”
I don’t live very near the coast. But it occurred to me that this was not an inevitable event. The phrase came to mind: “. . . and said to the proud wave, ‘Thus far and no farther’ ” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 124).
This was a citation in the Bible Lesson I was studying from the Christian Science Quarterly, and I’d just read in the Bible how the children of Israel were saved by God when they were in great danger. As they fled slavery in Egypt and were pursued by hundreds of Pharaoh’s select chariots and army, they reached an impasse at the Red Sea. Moses led the Israelites, and he reassured them, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to-day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to-day, ye shall see them again no more for ever” (Exodus 14:13).
