A man in my neighborhood has had some lingering mental and physical challenges. He currently lives alone and chooses to isolate himself, so our interactions have usually been brief. Some of us have tried to help him in practical ways. But recently, I realized I should be doing more—I needed to care enough to share the one thing I knew could bring light and healing to his life. I let him know I had something to give him and asked when we could meet.
As it turned out, we ran into each other on the street, and he asked if that was a good time. I quickly got the copy of the Bible and the copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy I had set aside for him. He was happy to receive them both. I explained what Science and Health is and what it has meant in my life, and we spoke briefly about Christianity and our individual experiences with church.
One day he came to my door in tears, wanting me to come out to talk with him. While we sat on a bench in the yard, he told me he had been upset about a family situation. He had opened Science and Health at random, and what he read met his need perfectly. Now he wanted to read the passage together. But he was feeling too emotional, so I read it aloud.
