Our God-guided purpose

From the May 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I first learned of Christian Science from my mother. She often shared her healing of a severe spinal injury in her childhood. It had been medically predicted that she would never walk again or have any children.

But then my grandmother met a Christian Science practitioner, an individual who provides metaphysical treatment through prayer for those who request it, at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, where my grandmother played the piano. She told the practitioner about my mom’s condition and asked for treatment. The practitioner agreed. My grandmother began taking my mom to Sunday School, and one day during Sunday School class, my mom joyfully stood up out of her wheelchair and confidently walked. And I’m one of three blessed children my mom went on to have!

Yearly, my mom read through Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. And she subscribed to the Christian Science periodicals. When I left home for college, my mom slipped issues of the Christian Science Sentinel into my suitcase—a magazine that includes practical and inspiring articles and testimonies of healing.
