The Bible: Our Sufficient Guide

Rediscovering the Ten Commandments

From the August 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

SOMETIMES LIFE CAN feel overwhelming or out of sync. Harmony can seem interrupted, with everything slipping beyond our control. I think of these moments as “too many toos”: Too much to do. Too little time. Too few signs of progress. Too much uncertainty about what comes next. Too weary to begin.

Once I found myself in a bind, with circumstances piling up faster than I could handle. I was teaching full-time and directing our school’s spring musical. My days were filled with classes, my evenings with rehearsals that ran late, my nights with too little sleep. Soon the stress began to take a physical toll. Fatigue, aches, chills, and a general sense of heaviness made each day harder than the one before. I felt I couldn’t possibly take time off—too many people were depending on me. I tried to shoulder the situation, but the strain increased.

At first, even prayer felt like one more thing I didn’t have energy for. Yet Christian Science had taught me that healing begins in thought, not in the body. I remembered that I didn’t have to hold everything together myself—I could rely on God, infinite Love. So I paused and asked Him to show me His presence and power. In the stillness of prayer, I began to perceive a foundation far steadier than personal effort: the spiritual order of God’s law.
