As humanity gets increasingly drawn to the Web as the go-to source for information and connections, how important is it to listen to a speaker in person? The feedback we receive regarding live lectures clearly shows that the preparation for these events, the contacts that are made, and the resulting opportunity to experience the shared effect of collective prayer retains a unique and valued purpose. When people gather together in one room with a single focus—to listen to a message grounded in Love—something special is felt.
The Mother Church receives lots of questions on a great variety of subjects. One subject that comes up pretty regularly has to do with disbursement of funds from international “trusts” (located in the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Germany).
Dear Fellow Members and Friends, Once again, I have the happy privilege of writing you to share news of today’s [June 6] admission of new members. Admission takes place at a regular business meeting of the Christian Science Board of Directors and is required in the Church Manual.
The Christian Science Board of Directors has elected Jonathan Wells to succeed Lyon Osborn as Manager of The Christian Science Publishing Society. In his current role as Managing Publisher of The Christian Science Monitor , Jonathan has helped guide the Monitor through a period of significant transition and growth.
J. Edward (Ned) Odegaard has served as Treasurer of The Mother Church since January 2005 and has, for some months now, been expressing his desire to devote his full attention to the public practice of Christian Science healing.
With his heart full of gratitude for more than 40 years of service to The Mother Church and The Christian Science Publishing Society, Bill Dawley resigned his position as Editor of the Christian Science periodicals, effective June 6, Annual Meeting Day, to dedicate full time to the healing practice he loves so much. First hired by The Christian Science Monitor in 1968 as copy editor for the sports page, Bill later worked for the Monitor in various positions, including as a newscaster for the World Service of The Christian Science Monitor.
As a refinement to how Mary Baker Eddy’s name is cited in the Christian Science magazines, we are making an adjustment to the recently updated guidelines. After the initial reference to “Mary Baker Eddy” in an article, authors may now elect to subsequently reference her as they choose—either as “Mrs.
In response to an earlier column, in which we wrote openly about the fact that our current subscription prices are substantially less than the actual cost of producing our magazines, one reader wrote, “Greater value must be placed on the periodicals. ” He then wrote movingly about how various articles had brought comfort and healing throughout his life.
Institutions have alway s played a role in the shaping and forming of society. Perhaps that’s as true today as at any time in history.
