From the Publishing Director's Office The Christian Science Journal , "a spiritual resource" In the May 1995 Journal , we asked, "How is the Journal meeting your need for spiritual understanding? How is it useful to you in your practice of Christian Science, the laws of God? How have you been able to share the Journal or its ideas with other spiritual seekers?" We wanted to share the following response: Hello! In answer to the question "How is the Journal meeting your need for spiritual understanding?" I would like to tell you why I, a non-Christian Scientist, subscribe to the Journal There is a unique spirit to Christian Science which I find immensely appealing and uplifting. I would describe this spirit as one of gentleness, compassion, optimism and serenity which is free of all pettiness.
Think for a moment about who in your community is looking for help. Perhaps it's a single parent who wants to nurture spiritual values in a teenager.
This year when members of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship were notified of their appointments, they received the following letter from The Christian Science Board of Directors. The letter indicates something of the depth of commitment and the spiritual purpose that are so vital to the lecture work.

From the Office of the Clerk— Church History It was June, and the weather had already warmed the city. A number of people crowded into the assembly hall to hear the sole speaker of the morning—a woman who spoke of a return to primitive Christianity, to the spiritual healing of sin and disease.
Whether you live in a large city or a small village, this October and November—and of course anytime—you are invited to join with other students of Science and Health to make the message of this book more available in your community. Here are some of the ways individuals, branches, societies, and Christian Science college organizations can participate: •Join in prayer for the receptivity of the message of Science and Health; •branch churches and Christian Science organizations can sponsor Christian Science lectures focusing on Science and Health; •with the help of materials available from the Publisher, introduce Science and Health and your Reading Room to the community; •advertise Science and Health in your city or town in cooperation with the Publisher; •purchase Science and Health at a discount for members to share; •fund copies of Science and Health for Assistant Committees on Publication to place in libraries; •encourage bookstores in your community to stock Science and Health.

In December 1894, Mary Baker Eddy ordained the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as pastor over The Mother Church. This Rule was extended by her in April 1895 to include all branch churches.
