Sometimes we ask ourselves why we are not making greater progress in our understanding and demonstration of Christian Science. In the earnest study of the writings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, we may find many answers to our query.
What a joy it is to find in Christian Science that, contrary to common belief, man is not cursed or condemned, but is eternally blessed and loved by the Father and is ever at one with Him. This revolutionary fact was of primary importance to Mary Baker Eddy.
Obedience! This word has new significance for us through the teachings of Christian Science. It is a common complaint, and a very old one, that it is much too difficult to obey all the Ten Commandments or even the rules set down by parents and civil authorities.
In the book of Exodus is given an account of the angel that appeared to Moses "in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush" ( 3:2 ). The account continues: "The bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
In reflecting on The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, established by Mary Baker Eddy, it is valuable to consider that within its membership are those from different walks of life. To The Mother Church and its branches come thoughtful seekers for spiritual light from many religious denominations, or from no denomination, and from many different races.
" If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" ( II Cor. 5:17 ).
Under stress, what student of the Bible has not sometimes found his faith in its validity threatened or even absent? Has he not been faced with the suggestion that because of the centuries intervening since Bible times, he has no personal proof of Biblical authority? Such a suggestion is erroneous, and its falsity may be proved. The revelation of Christian Science gives the true meaning of the Scriptures.
How interesting it is to see the unfoldment of a lovely flower, for instance, a rose. First there is the tight bud with little to reveal the beauty lying within.
One cannot advance very far into the study of Christian Science without running into many passages wherein the words "inspire," "inspiration," and "inspirational" are found. Through prayer and consecration—through a constant communing with God—the receptive thought receives a flood tide of spiritual inspiration, and one feels the healing balm of divine Love pouring into consciousness.
All civilization, to a greater or lesser degree, is subject to and governed by law. Human laws, to the extent that they pattern divine law, stabilize and unify society.
