EXAMINE THE BAIT

From the March 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Experience teaches us that as we go about our daily affairs we must be alert to discern the difference between what is real and what is unreal. Experience further teaches us that the old adage, "Seeing is believing," is not always true. Some practical examples which are common to all of us are the suggestions that on the horizon the sky meets the earth; that a railroad track converges at a distant point; and that the sun moves around the earth.

Sense testimony bids us accept all these things as true, yet experience and education indicate that they are optical illusions. Our perception of this fact greatly expands our freedom of activity; for if we believed what we saw, we would not venture far from home, and we would have a limited experience.

Just as human education releases us from the limitations of optical illusions, so spiritual education releases us from the limitations of material sense. Every student of Christian Science is grateful for the spiritual enlightenment gained through its teachings, for this enlightenment enables him to differentiate between that which is real and that which is illusion.
