THE GIFT OF PEACE

From the March 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the material world, with its many conflicts, this profound promise of centuries past, given us by our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, still provokes assurance (John 14: 27): "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

How warm and gracious is this gift; yet, strangely, how few accept it. Before a gift can serve its purpose, it must first be accepted. Otherwise its full efficacy is unappreciated. Although this offer of Jesus is ever open, it is rarely fully accepted, because without an understanding of the promised Comforter, the way to accept peace is largely unknown.

The record of this gift of peace occurs in the fourteenth chapter of John in a context rich in promise and precept. In this and the following two chapters, we notice the repeated reference of Jesus to the Comforter, which he defines as the "Spirit of truth" and the Holy Ghost. We find also that Jesus insisted on going to the Father. The Master's reiteration of the coming of the Comforter and of his going to the Father testifies to the profound and practical significance which both should have for us in our search for the peace which Jesus so longed to share. His reiteration indicates the divine source of his peace and power.
