Exploring in depth what Christian Science is and how it heals.

No ordinary career

Christian Science nursing—a many-faceted art.

A number of active, working Christian Scientists were asked to write us letters telling how they study the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the "Christian Science Quarterly. " Following are excerpts from some of these letters.

The Challenge and Potential of Usher Service

Are you serving your church as an usher? And do you sometimes think of it as a merely routine activity? Have you perhaps thought that it is one of the least spiritually demanding posts in church work? Stop a moment and consider its potential for healing. What kind of spiritual impact would result if ushers invariably approached their work prayed-up to the point of spiritual readiness and buoyancy? If they consistently —prayed for spiritual clear-sightedness to see everyone as the son of God? —prayed for spiritual alertness and compassion to detect and meet whatever need might arise? —prayed to see the service itself, not as a collection of mortals gathering to hear some words read from the desk, but as the very unfoldment of God's Word embracing all in love and healing inspiration? The answer is obvious.

Aging Is Self-imposed

Old age is a mental blindfold we should refuse to wear. It is woven of mortal thought called time.

Seeing Through the Illusion of Sickness

One of the most basic popular misconceptions is that the body operates separately from the mind. Jesus disproved this.

Outreach with Results

How can outreach bring results? A challenging question. My search for the answer was stimulated while attending an Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, where one of the speakers made the statement, "There is not one truth for the white man and another truth for the black man.

A Priceless Pearl

In one of his many parables, Christ Jesus compared heaven to a priceless pearl. He said, "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Argue on the Good Side

As Tevye, in the musical play Fiddler on the Roof, argues with himself on both sides of the question, so in our healing work, at one time or another, we may be tempted to argue as much on one side as on the other. It is the nature of error to get us to contend on either side of a question.

Sitting on the Sidelines?

One Sunday while discussing membership in The Mother Church and its branches with a teen-age Sunday School class, I asked, "If you knew a lot about playing football and had great athletic ability, what would be the most effective thing you could do to help your hometown team win?" Instantly a six-footer in the class replied, "Join the team!" "All right," I pursued. "You join the team—get a snappy new uniform—looks great! But will that win games? What else must you do to be of real value on the team?" The answer came in one word, "Practice!" What if the "team" we are talking about is the Church of Christ, Scientist, and "practice" is learning how to pray in order to heal? The world's need for healing grows greater every hour, and Christian Science, bringing mankind the practical power of the Christ, Truth, is adequate to save and heal.
