Dear Church Family and Friends,
This time of year our thoughts turn naturally to the healing Christ. It’s sweet refreshment amidst the “mad ambition, rivalry, and ritual of our common Christmas” (Mary Baker Eddy, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 262).
In fact, this is the perfect time to reflect with gratitude on the past year’s healings—for ourselves, for friends and family, in our churches and communities, and in the world.
It’s also the perfect time to reread the Gospels, to appreciate the truly radical nature of Jesus’ teachings, and to ask ourselves the perennial question: Jesus taught it. Can we live it?
In answer, cynics often trot out this quote, attributed to British writer G.K. Chesterton: “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” But Christian Scientists do put our Master’s teachings into practice to some degree every single day. And that blesses the world.
You may be interested in sharing some of those blessings at Radical Acts, a TMC Youth project that began this year. Radical Acts is an ecumenical online community that’s following Jesus’ most challenging teachings together. Participants of all ages are challenging themselves to BE childlike, FORGIVE 70 x 7, LIVE more abundantly, SEEK the kingdom of God first, etc.—and they’re succeeding.
So we are wishing every member and friend a truly radical Christmas. Jesus taught it. Can we live it? Absolutely!
