How I’ve studied the Christian Science Bible Lesson

- Lessons from the Pastor

[Editor’s note: The Christian Science Bible Lesson is comprised of passages from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. These two books serve as Pastor for The First Church of Christ, Scientist.]

I did not always appreciate or value the weekly Christian Science Bible Lessons, especially in my younger years. They were too long, or it seemed as if the same Bible story was used again and again. The majority of the Lessons were six sections. So when I found out they were useful in feeling God’s protection throughout the day, I began to read three sections a day. Then I realized that 20 minutes was all that was needed for me to finish reading the whole Lesson. Then it turned into, “If I can’t ‘give God’ just 20 minutes a day, how can I fully appreciate 24/7 care from Him?” I thought I’d better get my priorities in order.

After having my first two children, I realized that each Lesson for the week contained a clear message that allowed me to handle what was going on that week. While at times it might be appropriate to read another Lesson weeks ahead, I stick with the current Lesson because there are still things to be learned and inspiration to be gained.
