The immediacy of Truth

- Lessons from the Pastor

The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, the textbooks of Christian Science, are as contemporary today as when they were written.

This point was driven home for me one morning when I read these verses from the book of Malachi: “For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver” (3:2, 3).

As I read that passage, something clicked with regard to the idea of “unfolding.” I saw that the “refiner’s fire” referred to in Malachi could refer to the purification of thought called “baptism,” which is still overturning and purifying every aspect of our human experience—our hopes, our desires. And this truth is current. What seems new is the unfoldment of what always has been and always will be.
