Sickness is the fruit either of ignorance or sin. Humboldt said: "The time will come when a sick man will be looked upon with the same abhorrence that we now regard a thief or a liar, for the reason that one condition is as much under the subjection of mind as the other; as susceptible of correction as the other.
What is it? Ans. —Living in the senses, or for their gratification.
A lady not yet thoroughly grounded in the principles of Christian Science, can not understand why a Scientist was not willing her patient, afflicted with an eruption on the hands, should bathe them in salt and water. She thought that God would not care if the patient did use a little materia medica.
Many invalids, who seem to all appearances Christ-like and good, yet with all their goodness are still physical sufferers, would not be so were it not for the belief back of all, and stronger than all, in the laws of physiology, hygiene, etc. , or in some sin entailed upon them by parents.
The expression "self control" is daily in the blatant mouths of preachers and moralists, the very cant of emptiness and folly. It means nothing; nor can any play of words, or cunning twisting of conception, ever give it meaning.
Nor can there be found a more rigorous type of practical morality, or clearer denunciations of evil-doing in every form, than exist among Christian Scientists. When they call sin "error," "delusion," "phantom," they mean, not what critics assume, but that the real man, who was created in the image of God, does not commit them.
