"Having Done All, Stand"

From the September 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If all would stand boldly for Truth, whether men would hear or forbear, praise or blame, the cause of Christian Science would not lag in thousands, but a world of sin and sorrow might be saved and blessed by their efforts. Galileo abjured the eternal and immortal truth which he had himself the glory of establishing, by a cowardly surrender to fear of those in authority. What matter that he whispered in the ear of a trusted friend, "E pur si muove," the cause he had at heart was retarded by his cowardice. In the hour of deepest need they all forsook our Lord and fled, unable to face the unbelief and scorn of opposers. So the cause was lost to the world in its perfect accomplishment. To-day it is necessary that we stand for the Truth we have been taught, and preach and practise it in its beautiful completeness, fearless of ecclesiastical or scholastic opposition, and prove by works not to be gainsaid or denied, the majesty of the doctrine we have espoused, lest again by timid neglect or cowardly omissions the salvation of the world be delayed.
