CHARITY

From the September 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Charity which cometh from divine Love is the "bond of perfectness." Faith has been called the "bond of union" in the church; but it has divided it instead of uniting. Faith without Charity is nothing. Factions think evil of each other's faith; "Charity thinketh no evil, is not easily provoked." It is the bond of union in the church of the Spirit.

To have charity means far more than to have faith, or to give all our goods to feed the poor. We may have faith and benevolence to do all of this, and then be like "sounding brass and tinkling cymbals."

Charity puts the very best construction upon the actions of others. It judgeth not according to appearances, but "righteous judgment," which is according to the motive of the heart.
