PERFECTION

From the July 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science aims at perfection, as universal harmony. Perfection is harmony, and harmony is perfection. All discord is imperfection, and all imperfection is a discord. So Truth is a logical unity, and error and falsity and fraud are known by their incoherency.

Now all the sects which oppose Christian Science agree in affirming that Christianity is an imperfect agency, designedly inadequate to remove the ills of mortal life. They say that discord, disease, and abnormal death are beyond its power, and the way to Eternal Life and perfection. They are all inconsistent dualists, and hold that body is an entity, just the opposite of Spirit, and yet able to feel and think as if it were Spirit; that it is an independent power, not subject to the Spirit; that it may suffer and make Spirit suffer, in spite of itself; and that for this there is no remedy but death,—that, to the good, death is the end of all evil.

Such a remedy is fantastic and artificial It is absurd to imagine that death, as the culmination of disease, of weakness, of prostration,—that the mere absence of healthy force, of all Reality, Life, and Love,—should be the source or occasion of entire and immortal perfection, or of any good whatsoever. The theory is an inversion of all rational thought and order. It stultifies all nature, God, and reason.
