I am a "living monument" to the truth of Christian Science. Four years ago a specialist operated on me for catarrh of the nasal passage. At the time he told me that I had organic heart trouble, also, one year ago last August, I had an attack of malarial fever, which resulted in paralysis of the whole right side. Three physicians, after attending me for four or five weeks, pronounced my case incurable. My condition was such that I could not myself take a teaspoonful of anything,—either nourishment or medicine. In this condition, my family physician left me, at twelve o'clock at night, telling my sister to watch me closely, I might die at any moment, and for some time I remained with no apparent change.
As a last resort, about two o'clock the same night, a Christian Science practitioner was sent for. While she was treating me, I fell asleep and slept as quietly as an infant. When I awoke she called for a glass of water, and I drank it. My pulse rose from thirty to seventy-eight in two hours, a few hours later I asked for my breakfast, and ate it, and continued to improve sufficiently to be taken to the parlor within a week. Then the physicians resumed treatment, and the Christian Scientist withdrew. The physicians then suggested that I try massage, which I did, with decided disadvantage. My heart attacks became so severe that the doctors administered the strongest medicine given in such cases, then it was that they had to stop all medicine since nothing was retained on my stomach.
Again the way opened for Christian Science. The practitioner came, and gave me one treatment (at 7.30 7.30 P.M.), and at 8.30 P.M. I commenced to be nauseated, and from that time until the next morning about two o'clock, I vomited incessantly. We sent the practitioner word, but she was quite undisturbed, and said simply, "Truth will do its work," and in two weeks I was moving my lower limb, which I had never done, since I was first paralyzed, and I have continued to improve. I have never taken medicine since.
